2013 CSA and new workshops for the season

We are launching into the 2013 season with a number of new folks who are joining us from the UK as farm managers and a toolbox of considerable skills as administrators and community organizers. The Holistic Management course in February starts our workshop season with an important emphasis on decision making skills and honing the ability to keep our goals clearly in sight. We will be offering more workshops in the early spring including our annual favourites, basketry and learning how to make a willow fence. April will see a fabulous weekend spent teasing out the deeper meaning of Parzifal, one of the most ancient and archeytpal quest stories the world of literature has ever known. Look for a Spring Spa day and more....

2011 is here with Watershed Basket CSA and new events

Watershed Basket CSA is looking forward to an exciting year of expansion with the help of some wonderful apprentices who are joining us from far and wide for the growing season. We will be hosting some planting and harvesting days that will include meals and bonfires in order to encourage our CSA members and others to connect with the land that nourishes us. A new website is being launched and details and registration for the CSA will be available at: www.watershedfarm.org

And we will once again be hosting a workshop led by Mike Wolter on Weaving a Living Willow Fence on Saturday, April 9th. Join us and learn how to make a “fedge” a hedge/fence that will grow over time and continue to delight for years. We will be able to see the fence made during our workshop last Spring and take care of any pruning or repairs necessary.

This workshop will give participants a hands-on experience as we learn how to build a fedge, tips on choosing the best location and prep for the site, advice about caring for your fedge and different ideas about plaiting, twining, weaving and latticing.

Weaving a Living Willow Fence and Spring Spa Day both huge hits!

Watershed Farm is now graced with a beautiful living willow fence that encircles the small orchard and chicken yard. Mike Wolter of nearby Rumtopf Farm did a superb job explaining techniques for growing willow for your own baskets and fences and care and maintenance of your new fence, and before lunch was eaten in the cozy straw bale cabin we had already constructed over twenty feet of a gently curving fence. After lunch we spent some time learning about propagation and pruning of grapes and many participants went home with bundles of beautiful willow rods for their own building projects. The fence work continued over the next couple of days under the supervision and hard efforts of Brandon, Griffin and Jonathan, our stalwart and handsome young work force.

On Sunday the women took over and enjoyed a sell out event that was hosted by Pollination Project as a fundraiser for the South Shore Waldorf School and Kindergarten: Spring Spa Rejuvenation Day. We began with Alexandra Niedegard's lovely FlowYoga class and then moved on to body work sessions offered by Jane Moody, Dorothea Schmidt, Bonnie Foster, Barbara Shaw and Allison Rew that covered everything from Ayurvedic balancing, Rhythmic Massage, Cranial Sacral work, Auricular Acupuncture and Aromatherapy body wraps and then there were the delicious natural facials and the Lotions and Potions workshop and a much appreciated lunch made by Bonnie Isabel. Our closing Restorative Yoga session was presented by the charming Amanda Morgan. A blissful and fun time was had by all. Thanks to all who offered services and participated...we promise we'll do it again before too long.

Pollination Project's SOUTH SHORE FOR HAITI benefit - a smashing success!

South Shore For Haiti - a benefit for Oxfam's Earthquake Emergency Relief Fund held at the Mahone Bay Centre on January 16 and sponsored by Pollination Project - was a smashing success! Over 300 hundred people turned out for an evening of music, food, crafts and information in aid and honour of the beleaguered people of Haiti. Dozens of volunteers came out with pots overflowing with chili and chowder, jugs of cider and trays of bread and sweets. We had two stages going full-time with over 15 wonderful musical acts playing all evening. The crafts tables were occupied by the children making all manner of artistic creations, some for sale and some to be sent to the children of Haiti. The event raised more money than had ever before been raised for any single cause in the local community. It exceeded all expectations in this regard. Oxfam was represented by Pat Kipping and her crew of volunteers. Pat addressed the gathering, offering some background on the work that Oxfam is doing on the ground in Haiti and elsewhere in the world. Camelia masterfully and lovingly organized the event and MC'd the evening and the community responded as we hoped and knew it would. The cause, of course, was that of the people of Haiti; but, in a real sense, it was the cause of local community building. While we know that every dollar raised can and will make a difference, we also know that the reconstruction effort required to meaningfully improve the lot of Haitian society and the sort of structural change necessary to result in social justice and a decent quality of life for the Haitian people will require substantially more than (and different) than what we (and all the other well-meaning and caring communities around the globe) could raise by way of charitable contributions. On the other hand, our own community was also a major beneficiary of the initiative. In coming together as we did, we reminded ourselves of our membership in the larger community called "humankind" and that we have not, even in the face of the personal, financial and social challenges that we face daily in our individual lives, lost sight of the welfare of our brethren elsewhere. In this sense, the experience was not merely about fundraising for a desperately compelling and urgent cause, it was also about revisiting our connection and sense of responsibility to each other. South Shore for Haiti was, therefore, wonderfully humanizing. Thanks to all who supported the event, to all who attended, donated, baked, cooked, served, sang, played, created, carried, assembled (and disassembled and cleaned up!) and gave of their love and caring.

1st Annual Stinking Rose Garlic Festival is a smashing success

We were thrilled to host the 1st Annual Stinking Rose Garlic Festival at Watershed Farm on November 1. Some 50 visitors got a crash course in best practices for growing garlic. Camelia started the day off with a workshop in the barn where the group engaged in lively discussion, separated the heads into cloves and enjoyed some delicious hot apple cider. We then moved over to the field that had already been prepared for planting and we managed to get 3 long rows of garlic in the ground. Lunch in the big house was prepared by the renowned Shelburne-based chef, Lothar Mayer, turned out to be one of the highlights of the day. More than one person was overheard saying that he/she hadn't eaten that well in a very long time! After lunch we headed over to the workshop for some live music, courtesy of the lovely Tanya Davis, followed by the fabulous Darren Arsenault and the amazing Wolfville duo, t@b. A marvellous day was had by all and the mission of Pollination Project was advanced by yet another in a long line of beautiful baby steps!
